  e-Book publishing

e-Book publishing and e-Publishing refer to methods of publishing using websites. Some e-Publishing uses a password protected area in a site -- a member's area that customers have to pay to access. Other e-Publishing involves creating downloadable e-Book files. Companies can provide a manual format for e-Publishing or manually publish online materials.

e-Book publishing has various snags or technical issues. Passwords is one. There needs to be a way to distribute passwords to the purchaser at the point of purchase. Many customers claim that they didn't receive their password when you email it to them which creates a customer service nightmare. What I found in my personal business is that you should send redundant passwords at all stages of the process. Its ideal to have the user create their own password. This way they have an easier time remembering it. Also, the password should be emailed to them just in case they lose the one they created. Its good to have a password retrieval system built onto your site because customers lose their passwords more often than you think. Additionally, there should be a way for site admin to easily send a password to the customer. The other stumbling block with e-Book publishing is that passwords can contain letters that can be confusing. An "l" and a "1" can easily be confused. One is a number and the other is a letter. It is better if you can avoid using either character at all to avoid confusion. The next problem is bizarre. When copying and pasting or entering a password, sometimes a blank space is saved into the password field. Then, when you type in your password to login, it doesn't work unless you include the blank at the end.

An e-Book publisher must have a system to generate passwords, and make sure they work when customers login. Additionally, there needs to be a way to make sure that only the user can login to their e-Book and not other people. Very few people share passwords, but how would you know if someone did. Keeping track of ip addresses who login with a particular password is an expensive but effective way to see who is using a password. Its still hard to know if its the same person on different computers, or different people, but at least you know how many computers are using the password, and what cities they are located in.
